A lot of his friends envy my dad because at his age, he still looks handsome and strong. He will be turning 70 later this year but he doesn’t look his age. In fact, he even looks younger than his older brothers. His secret? A positive outlook, a quiet life and lot’s of exercise.
Dad has diabetes, but he didn’t let the disease put him down. As soon as we found out about it, he ditched the sweets. Oh, he’s a sweet tooth alright so the first few months were very difficult for him. And back then, sugar-free treats were not very popular around here. He loves to eat and can’t survive without rice so mom required him to exercise. It’s been almost 20 years since we found out about his diabetes but he managed very well. With the help of meds of course, but his discipline and self determination helped a lot.
Diabetes runs in my family and we’ve had a few relatives who passed away because of complications. I am very thankful that my father takes care of himself. I believed my grandmother when she told me once that you’ll feel a lot worse if you think you’re ill. She’s right because dad didn’t let his diabetes get into him.
